About This Tour

Chitwan National Park represents Nepal's most accessible and rewarding wildlife destination, offering encounters with megafauna that rival East African safaris but in the dramatically different setting of subtropical Asian jungle. As Nepal's first national park (established 1973) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, Chitwan protects 932 square kilometers of Terai lowlands—a narrow belt of grasslands, sal forests, and riverine ecosystems running along Nepal's southern border. Our three-day safari maximizes wildlife viewing opportunities while immersing you in the culture of the indigenous Tharu people.

The park's signature species is the greater one-horned rhinoceros, and with over 600 individuals, your chances of multiple sightings approach near-certainty. These prehistoric-looking creatures, which can weigh up to 2,200 kilograms, graze peacefully in grasslands and wallow in muddy pools, often allowing surprisingly close observation. Unlike their African counterparts, Asian rhinos are solitary and less aggressive toward safari vehicles and boats, though professional guides maintain safe distances. Peak viewing times occur during early morning and late afternoon when rhinos emerge from dense vegetation to feed in open areas.

While rhino sightings are virtually guaranteed, glimpsing Chitwan's 120 Bengal tigers requires both skill and fortune. Tiger populations have recovered dramatically in recent decades thanks to anti-poaching efforts, currently numbering around 120 individuals. Tigers remain elusive, preferring dense forest cover and hunting primarily at dawn and dusk. However, evidence of their presence—fresh pugmarks in sandy riverbanks, territorial scratch marks on trees, alarm calls from spotted deer—adds thrilling suspense to jungle walks. Even without direct sightings, tracking tigers with experienced naturalists and learning to read jungle signs provides fascinating insights into apex predator behavior.

The park's avian diversity—over 550 recorded species—delights birdwatchers of all levels. Winter months bring migratory species from Siberia and Central Asia, including various storks, ducks, and raptors. Resident species include the spectacular peacock pheasant, Bengal florican, and several kingfisher varieties. Early morning bird walks with naturalist guides often reveal species like the oriental darter, various egrets and herons stalking fish in rivers, and colorful bee-eaters performing aerial insect hunts. For serious birders, the park offers some of Asia's premier waterfowl habitat.

Our safari program balances different wildlife viewing methods. Canoe trips along the Rapti River in traditional dugout canoes provide excellent opportunities for observing gharial and mugger crocodiles basking on riverbanks, plus water birds and occasionally, rhinos coming to drink. The river's gentle current allows silent approach to wildlife, and the low vantage point offers unique photographic angles. Jeep safaris penetrate deeper into the park than elephant safaris, covering more territory and accessing areas where tiger and leopard sightings are more likely. Four-wheel-drive vehicles ford rivers, navigate rough tracks through sal forests, and emerge into vast grasslands where herds of spotted deer, wild boar, and occasionally, wild elephant, can be observed.

Elephant-back safaris, while controversial in some conservation circles, remain popular for their unique perspective. Sitting atop an elephant allows penetration into tall elephant grass where rhinos hide, and the elephants' presence doesn't alarm other wildlife as vehicles do. Our partner lodges work exclusively with elephants from the government breeding center, where animals are well-cared for and mahouts follow strict guidelines limiting riding hours and weight limits. For guests with ethical concerns about elephant riding, our jeep and canoe safaris provide equally rewarding wildlife experiences.

The cultural component of the Chitwan experience centers on Tharu heritage. The Tharu people developed genetic resistance to malaria, allowing them to thrive in the Terai when these lowlands were nearly uninhabitable to others. Their distinctive architectural style features thick mud walls and thatched roofs without eaves, designed to minimize mosquito entry. Evening cultural programs showcase Tharu stick dances, traditionally performed after successful harvests, with rhythmic movements and vibrant costumes. Village walks reveal traditional lifestyles—observing ox-driven plowing, exploring thatched homes, and learning about medicinal plants used in folk medicine.

Accommodation options in Chitwan span from basic community-run lodges to luxury eco-resorts. Budget lodges offer simple but clean rooms and authentic local interaction, while mid-range properties provide comfortable rooms, swimming pools, and decent international cuisine. Top-tier lodges feature air-conditioned premium cottages, spa services, and gourmet dining, yet all levels include similar safari activities—the main difference lies in lodging amenities rather than wildlife experiences.

Seasonal considerations significantly impact the Chitwan experience. The October-March dry season offers optimal conditions: comfortable temperatures, clear skies, minimal rainfall, and tall grasses burned or cut back, improving visibility. April-May becomes increasingly hot but offers excellent pre-monsoon birding. The monsoon season (June-September) brings heavy rains, floods that may close park areas, dense vegetation limiting visibility, and increased leech presence, though dramatically reduced tourist numbers and lower prices attract hardy visitors willing to accept challenging conditions.
